What are Civil Funerals?

Civil Funerals are non-religious funeral services performed by a Civil Funeral Celebrant. 20140303-Civil-funeral

A Civil Funeral is a funeral driven by the wishes, beliefs and values of the deceased and their loved ones, not by the beliefs or ideology of the person conducting the funeral. The ceremony will capture the very essence of the person and tell the story of the life that has been lived.

A Civil Funeral Ceremony

  • reflects the beliefs, wishes, values and cultural traditions of the person who has died.
  • fulfils the needs of the people closest to that person.
  • meets the expectations of all who come to the funeral.

It is a highly personal ceremony and because the family of the deceased oversee the creation of it in partnership with the Civil Funeral Celebrant, the ceremony can be everything they want it to be. A Civil Funeral Ceremony can be held anywhere, other than a church or place of worship. Candle2

A Civil Funeral is similar to a Humanist funeral with one difference – a Humanist ceremony will not have any religious content whereas a Civil Funeral can have as much or as little religious content as the family may wish. There may be special music or a hymn or song to be played. You can include any readings or poetry you would like. You may or may not want a prayer or two. At the heart of the ceremony will be a tribute or eulogy which reflects the life of the person who has died.
